Egmond-binnen

Egmond
From way back, Egmond was a fishing village. The Jan van Speijk lighthouse, with its striking white appearance, keeps a watchful eye over the sea and the village. The seaside resort of Egmond aan Zee, which borders the North Holland Dune Reserve, is especially loved by people who have a liking for conviviality. There is plenty to do in Egmond: a varied choice of restaurants, beach cafes and amazing little shops. You can saunter along the long rows of terraces, or observe folks from behind a large scoop of ice cream. Let’s not forget the well-known Half Marathon, attracting many thousands of sports enthusiasts to Egmond every year. From the cultural historical point of view, there is also plenty to see. In Egmond aan den Hoef there are the ruins and the Castle Chapel to visit, plus the Abbey in Egmond-Binnen. Of course, the bulb fields cannot be forgotten. Egmond Binnen is the furthest inland, surrounded in spring by colourful fields of bulbs in bloom. The centre has modern shopping facilities as well as historical aspects such as Adelbertusakker, a field going back to the 9th century where the Christianisation of Europe began, and the abbey. The later was laid waste in the 16th century and rebuilt centuries later. Benedictine monks still live in the abbey. Lioba monastery which lies beyond it is still functioning.
