History of fishing industry
People have battled against the water in Egmond from time immemorial. In the course of the centuries parts of the village have regularly disappeared into the sea, as in the 18th century. However, the sea has also brought much prosperity, as the inhabitants have earned their living primarily by catching fish. There are still many reminders of the past involving fishing, such as the fishermen’s huts and the fishermen’s memorial. The Prins Hendrik Stichting (Prince Hendrik Foundation) is an imposing building and originally a shelter for former sailors. Egmond Museum gives an idea of the history. The village walk (available from the VVV) also gives an idea of the past. Prominent on the boulevard you will still find two buildings involved with the sea; these are the Jan van Speyck lighthouse and the boathouse of the Royal Netherlands Rescue Service.
