Wind farm
You can sometimes see it from the shore: the Egmond aan Zee offshore windfarm. The first windfarm in the North Sea numbers 36 wind turbines, enough to privide more than 100,000 households with electricity. At the beginning of 2007 the HRH the Prince of Orange accompanied by fourteen schoolchildren from Egmond aan Zee officially inaugurated the wind farm. The wind farm is located close to Egmond aan Zee, 10 to 18 kilometres from the shore. The location has been chosen by the Dutch government. The decision to took into account the safety of shipping, the effect on nature and the offshore construction costs. The windfarm is a closed area. To protect the wind farm and in connection with the safety of shipping a safety zone of 500 metres around the wind farm has been announced.
